Operation: Inner Space

I recently received permission from Bill Stewart (Programming and CEO/CTO of Software Dynamics/Dynamic Karma) and Doug Blackley (Music for Inner Space) to do a remake of the original game. Doug was even kind enough to let me use his original sounds for the remake.

If you've never played Operation: Inner Space then you've been missing out. Inner Space was one of those games that you could play over and over, because it would dynamically generate content based on what was on your hard drive. This was back in 1994, it was developed for Windows 3.1 and was released on a single floppy disk.

There are a couple reasons why I decided to make the sequel to Inner Space.

1) Inner Space was originally made for Windows 3.1, however it can still run on 32-bit versions of Windows 7. Inner Space is a 16-bit NE executable, and Microsoft stripped out support for 16-bit executables in all of their 64-bit Operating Systems. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but about 2 years ago 64-bit versions of Windows have pretty much become the standard for OEM installs on new computers. I'm find it harder and harder to find someone with something besides 64-bit Windows 7, so I can no longer recommend Inner Space like I used to.

2) Inner Space was FUN! There was a healthy dose of humor, it was customizable, it had a great AI and you could play the game on even the crappiest of computers. Inner Space left off when viruses were static, usually malicious things. Nowadays we have worms, trojans, rootkits (Oh my!) IDS/IPS, firewalls, ect, ect. Sticking as close to the original as I can, and yet adding in some new interesting enemies I hope to do the original justice.

As I start to get closer to a alpha/beta I will start posting new screenshots, and start sending out test copies for playtesting. I hope to do the game justice, and make the original developers proud!
